John McAllion

John McAllion was born in Glasgow in 1948 and educated at St Augustine's Secondary, and at St Andrew's University and Dundee College of Education. He worked as a teacher and then as a reseracher for Glasgow Central MP Bob McTaggart. He was elected to Tayside Regional Council in 1984 and became Leader of the council in 1986. In 1987, he became Labour MP for Dundee East, gaining the seat from the SNP. He he stood down from Westminster in 2001, having took the new Scottish Parliamentary seat of Dundee East for Labour in 1999. He lost the seat to the SNP in 2003. He quit the Labour party in October 2003 and has since joined the SSP.
